Introducing MSN organisational member - RUSH Mentoring Services
At our June 2017 meeting, Bryan Blisset, Mentor Co-ordinator at RUSH, described the RUSH mentoring program.
RUSH works together with the student's school, family and community to provide support to teenagers ‘at risk’. The target group is students between 12 and 16 years old. A significant role model (volunteer mentor) in the young person’s life meets with them in weekly one-on-one, out of school mentoring sessions. Outcomes have been an increase in the resilience of young people involved in the program, reduced truancy rates, increased self-esteem and positive changes in behavior observed by teachers in the class-room.
RUSH mentors are good listeners and motivators. They are able to be a positive role model and friend and commit to:
- A 12 month mentoring period.
- An hour per week, 3 weeks in 4.
- Participating in quarterly mentor and mentee activities.
- Reporting monthly on contact and activities, along with any concerns etc.(Reports are made to partner schools to assist them in working with the young person.)
RUSH operates in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the greater Newcastle area, and always has mentoring opportunities available.
If you would like to know more or become involved as a mentor, contact Bryan at RUSH.
